ABSTRACT

Introduction: As pregnancy is a new experience for Primipara mothers shown that postnatal period is more difficult for them and they need more emotional support than multipara mothers. Although, Primipara mothers may have less awareness of postnatal care and Self-Care practices. In India, according National family health survey- 4, the rate of CS is increased up to 17.2 per cent. The major components of postnatal care are prevention of infection, early detection and treatment of complications, support of exclusive breastfeeding, self-care, counselling about contraception method, education about maternal nutrition and supplementation, postnatal exercise and follow-up. Objective: To identify the Self-Care practices and learning needs of Primipara mothers with a view to provide need based on-hand health instructions. Methods and material: The research approach and design selected for the present study was quantitative research approach, cross sectional research design. The sample size consisted of 100 Primipara mothers who undergone LSCS. The sampling technique was adopted is non-probability purposive sampling technique. The tool was adopted as: Tool 1: Personal profile, Tool 2: Health history of Primipara mothers, Tool 3: Observation practice checklist to identify the Self-Care practices of Primipara mothers, Tool 4: Structured knowledge questionnaire to assess the learning need of Primipara mothers. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics. Result: The majority 35(58%) mothers were in moderate knowledge score regarding postnatal care. Whereas, 11 (18%) mothers were low knowledge score category and 14(23%) mother’s were in high category score. Regarding Self-Care practices, none of the mothers had performed Self-Care practices on 2nd day in few areas, after providing on-hand health instructions mothers had performed Self-Care practices. Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of mothers had not performed Self-Care practices after LSCS after providing on-hand health instructions mothers learning need and Self-Care practices is improved, hence on-hand health instructions will improve the knowledge and practices of mothers.
